Though e-commerce is the trendiest one it's not profitable to all the sectors. There are sectors which are struggling to sustain and also facts like tight competition and reflects the challenges of an emerging e-commerce business.
6. Book retail story
Selling a book through online is an emerging business. There are lots of hurdles to gain much from print industry. Flip kart, which set out as book retailing portals, has spread out to cover other products since investors find the difficulty to sustain. Investors say that, Books were a good hook to draw users but on its own, book retailing online is not a scalable business. It will work online but can never become very big as the average book value in India is very low. That is why sites like Flipkart and Infibeam are expanding into other categories,said Suvir Sujan, Nexus Venture Partner. Book retailers also sell movie and music DVDs, games and mobile handsets to gain profit.
