An application program that is a simple programming environment so powerful yet simple that it is used by professionals and children alike was created by Bill Atkinson for Apple Computer, HyperCard was among the first successful hypermedia systems. Included with all new Macs sold during that time, the device was withdrawn from sale in 2004. One of the reasons for its failure was that it always felt like HyperCard was its own little GUI universe running within the Mac OS. Not only did HyperCard stacks eschew the standard Mac OS GUI control widgets, but it also hides the menu bar.
