Jaydeep Mandal and Sombodhi Ghosh are running Aakar Innovations, a Delhi-based startup. They have developed and designed a machine that produces low-cost sanitary napkins by utilizing raw material agri-wastes such as banana fibre, bamboo and water-hyacinth pulp. Each of these machines has a capacity to churn out about 2,000 sanitary pads per day and the startup sells them for a cost that is 40 percent less than the branded sanitary products currently available in the market.

Aakar developed these machines to bypass the current female-unfriendly distribution system in India and hopes to make profit by selling these machines for 2,50,000 ($4000) a time to groups of women running societies for women-welfare. These sanitary pads are selivered door-to-door by village saleswomen and will also be distributed to beauty salons and grocery stores run by women. Aakar also sells the raw materials needed for the machines.
