Scholarships Proposed for Pure Science Students: Mangalore University

The proposal of offering scholarships to students to pursue pure science would culminate in the next academic year, once it’s approved by the Finance Committee. Murthy said, “During the academic meeting held on Saturday, we decided that the budget for this could be up to 25 lakh. So, even if we give a minimum of 5,000 as scholarship per year, we can include around 300 in the scholarships. The specifics have to be chalked out after a meeting with the Syndicate and Academic Council,” as reported by The Hindu.

Murthy informed that these scholarships would be offered to meritorious students opting for chemistry, physics, biology or mathematics for graduation or post-graduation. The scholarship would be accessible for all 198 colleges affiliated with the university. The Vice-Chancellor said that only with the high demand for scientists and enhanced expenditure in research infrastructure, a career in pure sciences could be made appealing for students to apply.

The Sugama Ganita function also exhibited models displayed by students of mathematics which showed the concept of pi, magic numbers and Vedic mathematics. Before the function these students had visited rural schools, enlightening high school students with the concepts of mathematics and Ramanujan’s contribution to science.
