Rebuilding Civilization In Uttarakhand Likely to Take Ages

The markets and hotels on the way to Kedarnath that were once crowded and full of life with tourists and pilgrims have now turned into a deserted area. The flash floods have also demolished some of the markets. Some shopping places are left just with skeletons of buildings. This has ruined the source of revenue of local businessmen and other people who depend on the annual yatra to the Kedarnath temple for their earnings.
Jagat Raj Goswami, a Hotelier in the most devastated areas said, “Nobody would have ever imagined that this will happen in devbhoomi. We lost our sources of income which cripples us completely. We have availed loans from national and local banks. We cannot even pay a single installment now,” reports DNA.

“My cow shed was washed away and so were my three mules. A single mule here costs anywhere between Rs1.5 lakh and Rs3.5 lakh,” added Ramesh Chand, mule owner.
According to Disaster Management Cell’s statistics, despite accounting the loss at 4,000 crores, no enough effort has been rendered by the government to formulate plans for immediate restoration of the locals.

With situations like this, putting life back on track, especially in the worst affected areas will indeed be a long drawn process.
