Mobile Users Made To Wait As Govt To Miss MNP Deadline
BANGALORE: Customers who were excited about the fact that they can retain their long existing mobile numbers through mobile number portability, will have to shed some more time now due to the technical issues faced by the telecom department, reports the Hindu Business Line.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India announced in September 2013 that mobile operators should offer full MNP to consumers by April 2014. But the Department of Telecom is caught up on some technicalities related to implementing the procedure. In addition, it looks like the government will miss on the deadline by at least some months from the date of deadline.
The reason for this delay is that the department of telecom has given licenses to only two companies to act on the proceedings of MNP operators. And the entire country has been divided into two zones with these two companies at the helm of affairs. Syniverse and Telcordia are the companies who are managing it in their respective zones. Now that the government has announced to go with full MNP, DoT is in a dilemma and unsure state of mind weather to continue with the same service providers or call for a fresh tender.
