Mobile Users Made To Wait As Govt To Miss MNP Deadline

DoT’s main concern is that, if it decides to continue with the existing companies then the earlier signed agreement to be included for pan-India permission. The other issue that has some serious thinking to be done by the officials is whether the companies should be limited to operate only in their respective zones or be given the authorization to function in each other’s territory.

Looking into all this problems, the DoT has finally sent a note seeking a decision from the Telecom Commission. Even if the Commission takes a decision by this month, it will at least take some months for the telecom companies to do the essential up-gradation on their network required to implement the MNP.

So for people who are still not aware of what full mobile number portability is intended to do. Well it allows mobile users to retain their phone number even while shifting from one network provider to another. For example, if an Airtel customer in Delhi changes to Vodafone in Chennai, he/she can retain the same Delhi phone number. Under the existing system, MNP permits only when the user changes his/her operator within the same circle.
