Locarno-Open Doors to highlight Indian films

Locarno: The 64th Locarno Film Festival puts the spotlight on India this year and an interesting bouquet of films including Raj Kapoor's "Aag", Shyam Benegal's "Manthan" and Ritwik Ghatak's "Dhaka Tara" will be shown in the Open Doors section at the fest, starting Aug 3. This year, Indian films will be the subject of a special focus in an exhibition and in a scheme designed to encourage co-productions with Indian producers and filmmakers, said a press statement. In the Open Doors section, the other Indian films to be showcased are Aparna Sen's "Mr and Mrs Iyer", Jahnu Barua's "Halodia Choraye Baodhan", Girish Kasaravalli's "Kanasemo Kudreyaneri", Chetan Anand's "Neecha Nagar", Adoor Gopalakrishnan's "Nizhalkkuthu", Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa", Vikramaditya Motwane's "Udaan", Umesh Kulkarni's "Valu" and Rajnesh Domalpalli's "Vanaja". There will also be a restrospective of Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, who was awarded an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. The Open Doors Co-Production Lab will take place Aug 6-9 and the aims is to assist directors and producers of the projects selected - 12 from India this year - in finding co-production partners to enable their films to be completed. At the end of the four-day lab, a jury will award a prize of 50,000 Swiss francs (39,000 euros), financed by the Open Doors initiative, with, for the first time this year, the participation of the City of Bellinzona. Renewing its collaboration with Open Doors, the CNC (Centre National du Cinema et de l'Image Animee, France) will offer a further prize of 7,000 euros to support development.
