Washington: Weightlifting can be a simple and effective method to beat the smoking habit. The study, by Miriam Hospital's Centres for for Behavioural and Preventive Medicine, is the first to examine weight training as an aid for giving up smoking. "Cigarette smoking kills more than a thousand Americans every day, and while the large majority of smokers want to quit, less than five percent are able to do it without help," journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research reports. Joseph Ciccolo, exercise psychologist and researcher with The Miriam Centres, enrolled males and females aged 18-65 years. They smoked at least five cigarettes daily, for the past year or more. The smokers who completed a 12-week resistance (weight) training were twice as likely to quit, compared to those who did not regularly lift weights, according to a Miriam Hospital statement.
