7. Amazon

2012 has seen a significant year for the e-commerce giant, Amazon. The company made many advances starting from announcing 1.26 million square foot warehouse to serve regions of Dallas, Houston, and Austin to acquiring robotics maker Kiva Systems for $775 million. Amazon spends almost 5.5 percent of its revenues on research and development and its innovative e-reader Kindle has made the company one of the leaders in delivering electronic books.

6. IBM

International Business Machines develops technology for different range of industries like medicine, alternative industry and automotive sectors. In 2012, IBM produced almost 6,500 patents, the highest compared to any other company in the world. It sold about 750 patents to Facebook in 2012 and about 1,000 patents to Google in 2010. The sheer number of patents itself communicates the company’s innovative stint.
