DHAKA: The Joint Economic Commission (JEC) of India and Bangladesh is likely to meet here next month to discuss bilateral trade ties, a foreign ministry official here said. According to the official, the foreign ministers of the two countries who head the JEC would also try to do some groundwork for a summit level meeting between India and Bangladesh. Asked whether Prime Minister Khaleda Zia would go to New Delhi for the meeting, the official said since she had visited India during her first term as prime minister from 1992 to 1996, Dhaka is expecting Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to come here this time. "Our prime minister has already extended an invitation to Vajpayee. We hope he will visit Bangladesh and contribute to the establishment of peace in the region and improve bilateral ties," the foreign ministry official added. He said matters of trade and commerce as well as political issues would be raised during the JEC meeting. The last meeting was held in New Delhi in 1999.
