How 10 Iconic Tech Products Got Their Names

#4 Mac OS X

Apple’s operating system for its computer series, Mac was originally named OS X, since it is the tenth release of the OS and X denotes the Roman numeral. However, many people refer X to the English letter “X.” But the interesting thing is the code names for each succeeding X releases. It comes in names of big cats- Cheetah/Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, which is nothing but a marketing strategy of the California tech giant. But some critics believe Apples OS names were inspired by British Mac-clone-maker Shaye, a competitor who gave Apple a brief but powerful run for its money during the mid-1990s. Shaye's computers were named for lions, panthers, tigers, leopards, jaguars, pumas and cheetahs, among others.

#3 Android

The world’s most popular Smartphone platform was created by Andy Rubin, who’s Startup Android Inc was acquired by Google in 2005. Apparently, the creator Andy Rubin loved robots a lot. Hear this from Nick Sears, the co-founder of Android: “You have to be a little bit careful when you’re around Andy and his robots. I’ve seen his dog attack his robots.” No wonder why he named the operating system Android, which combines half of his name and half “Droid” which means robot.
