How 10 Iconic Tech Products Got Their Names
#6 Twitter
Twitter's origins lies in a "daylong brainstorming session" held by board members of the San Francisco based podcasting startup Odeo. The original code name for founder Jack Dorsey’s idea was twttr, which was proposed by cofounder Biz stone as the application reminded him of birds communicating: "Short bursts of information...Everyone is chirping, having a good time." According to Dorsey, "...we came across the word 'twitter', and it was just perfect. The definition was 'a short burst of inconsequential information,' and 'chirps from birds'. And that's exactly what the product was." The product they invented had developed into a powerful communicating medium and a forum, which soon became one of the top ten websites in the world.
#5 Windows 7
Microsoft’s Windows 7, released after the failure of its predecessor Windows Vista, seems to follow no naming philosophy according to the company. According to Windows veteran Mike Nash, while introducing Windows 7: "Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore 'Windows 7' just makes sense." But many people think Microsoft execs should have hoped that number 7 will deliver its promise of luck to the O.S, which is a desperately needed win after Vista.
