Food Bill: An Indirect Ticket To the Ruling Party for a Third Term?

This ambitious National Food Security ordinance was a promise given by the ruling government during the last election to combat hunger of the masses and also to fully abolish the problem of malnutrition since India has witnessed more rates of malnourished children as compared to any other country in the world.

The government, through the food security bill promises a kilo of rice at just three rupees, wheat and millet at two rupees and one rupee respectively. For those who fail to avail this benefit, cash will be distributed, especially to the homeless, pregnant women, lactating mothers and the elderly.

“The measure will apply to 75percent of Indians living in rural areas and 50 percent of the urban population,” reported BBC News.

Though many Indians might greatly benefit from this bill, this was launched with a focus and plan of the ruling Congress party to win a third term in elections due by May 2014.
