Born in 1954 in a political environment, Madhav Chavan would have been into politics. But, certain incidents and wind of change led him to a different direction. He is an Indian social activist and educationist. He is the cofounder and CEO of Pratham, an educational non-profit organization. Chavan also started the Read India campaign, which aims to teach basic reading, writing and arithmetic to underprivileged children across India. Chavan did his graduation in Chemistry and received his doctorate from Ohio State University. He taught Chemistry at the University of Houston and the University of Mumbai before getting into the adult literacy in the National Literacy Mission in the slums of Mumbai. He returned to India in 1983 after which he produced literacy programs for Doordarshan for a few years. He was invited to work with a UNICEF project to teach in Mumbai's slums. He was the member of National Advisory Council and is also the member of the Governing Council of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Mission (SSA) of the Government of India and has been a member of four half-yearly Joint Review Missions of SSA.
