Anita Ahuja
Five Most Innovative Social Entrepreneurs
A well known social entrepreneur, Anita Ahuja co-founded Conserve India with her husband Shalabh in 2003 to improve the lives of the rag pickers. Conserve India is a unique income-generation program - recycling plastic waste to create beautiful export-quality handbags. The NGO started out with collecting and sorting waste from 500 households around the city. Anita soon found a way to recycle the plastic bags when one of her designer friend asked for some of the collected plastic to make handbags. Today Conserve India's handbags are sold on high streets across the globe. They employ more than 300 employees and have a turnover of around $150,000. Born in Bhopal, Anita is the daughter of a freedom fighter. She did her BA and Masters in Literature and Political Science from Delhi University. Registered in 1998, Conserve India became a full time commitment, an organization in its own rights, by 2002. They started getting grants from the Delhi Government, Ministry of Environment, USAID and World Bank.
