Movie: Roja (1992)

Pankaj Kapur as Liaqat in Roja

The film Roja is originally made in Tamil and then dubbed in Hindi. Mani Ratnam’s Roja is one among the best movie on terror till date and also it is the first part of terror trilogy followed by Bombay and Dil Se. The film starts with Roja (Madhoo), a simple young south Indian woman who gets married with Rishi (Arvind Swamy), a government employee, who is assigned a posting at an army communications center in Kashmir soon after their marriage. The story takes a different turn when Rishi is kidnapped by terrorists whose agenda is to separate Kashmir from India and to release their leader Wasim Khan, a Kashmiri terrorist from judicial custody. In this film, Pankaj Kapur played the character of Liaqat, the head of the terrorist group in Kashmir. The character may not portray the brutal side of a terrorist but his incensed eyes and the amount of intensity with which he calls out ‘Jihaad!’ is sure to give one a goose bump. The soundtrack of the film is produced by A.R. Rahman and is known to be the “10 Best Soundtracks” of all time listed by TIME magazine of 2005 edition.
