Checks on to ensure water quality: Delhi Jal Board

Bangalore: The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Monday said it regularly checks the water quality right from the raw water supply stage till it reaches the consumer. "To ensure and maintain the quality of water, water samples are tested regularly and necessary steps like flushing the water line and disinfecting the underground reservoirs have been undertaken regularly," Ramesh Negi, chief executive officer of DJB, told reporters Monday. "A total 16,190 water samples have so far been tested for the year 2011-12. On an average, 300 water samples are lifted and tested daily from the distribution network," he added. Two months ago the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had claimed that 18 percent of the water supplied by the DJB is contaminated. Negi said that the DJB has constructed an underground reservoir and a booster pumping station, which when commissioned in July will boost water supply in north Delhi areas. "Around three lakh residents in areas like Mangolpur Kalan, Vijay Vihar Phase-I and II, Gopal Vihar, Rohini Sector I to IV and adjoining areas will be benefited," Negi said. According to the board, the daily consumption of water in the national capital is about 850 million gallon. "Other than the water supplied by the DJB, about 200 million gallon water is taken from borewells," Negi added.
