Billionaires' Newspaper Fixation

For instance, Indian newspapers like Malayalam Manorama, The Indian Express, The Hindu, Anandabazar Patrika, and many other came up during the time of India’s freedom struggle.

Only because big businessmen in India funded for the development of these newspapers out of sheer patriotism, and that is how these newspapers survived.

The biggest achievement for many newspaper publishers which existed in the 60s and 70s was to bring out the paper every morning.

For every few months of gap, all the publishers had to reapply to the Registrar of Newspapers to get the newsprint quota, out of which 30 percent were imported. And the rest of the newspapers were bought from domestic producers who used to sell poor-quality newsprint at imported prices.

When liberalization took place there was some ray of hope for the print media in India as there was introduction of investments and professionalization.

But the scenario changed in 2002 when the FDI norms were introduced and the print media started witnessing the growth.
