Asia's Longest Ongoing Military Conflicts
5. Insurgency in Northeast India:
The Northeast region of India comprises of eight states – Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim– a region poorly connected to the Indian mainland by a small corridor called the Siliguri Corridor. The insurgency in these regions originates from the calls of different groups to be completely separated, be independent, or be given regional autonomy in the country. It is the feeling of second-class citizenship meted out to them by the rest of India which has led the natives of these states to seek for greater participation in self-governance. There have been a number of insurgent activities and regional movements in all parts of the northeast. Military action by the armed and paramilitary forces and political action have led to the intensity of these insurgencies. Though regional tensions have reduced as of late, militancy still exists within the region. At present, insurgent activity is actively present in north-east states like Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura.
