NEW YORK: Tata Consultancy Services will open an "Automotive Centre of Excellence" in Detroit, from where it will provide information technology, manufacturing and engineering consulting and services to its roster of North American automotive customers.

The centre will be fully functional within the next two months and TCS is planning to hire 50 local automotive professionals in the next 12 to 18 months to augment its automotive specialists currently residing in Detroit, the company said.

TCS executives cite the move as a key development in the expansion of the firm's global delivery model.

"The establishment of this Centre of Excellence demonstrates our commitment to the people of Detroit, and we embrace the opportunity to extend our contribution to the local economy," said president of TCS America Arup Gupta.

"Strengthening our local position is critical to meeting the demands of our Detroit-based clientele, and an Automotive Centre of Excellence will provide Integrated Engineering and Industrial services to our automotive customers in the region," he added.

TCS counts the Detroit based automotive OEMs, Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler among its customers, as well as several of the automotive industry's leading tier-one suppliers, including Johnson Controls and Eaton. The Centre, the company said, is an extension of TCS' current presence in Detroit, where the firm maintains a development centre dedicated to servicing several of its local customers. The existing development center also has plans to scale up in the coming year.

"The decision to extend our presence in Detroit was driven by the needs of our customers," explained K Karthik, Northeast Regional Director for TCS.

"TCS strives to service every customer in the exact capacity that suits their business needs, whether in an on-site, off-site, near-shore, or offshore capacity.

In the case of this Automotive Centre of Excellence, our automotive customers have a viable option where we can execute projects off-site but in close proximity to their businesses."

TCS offers a wide range of integrated engineering and industrial services to manufacturers in the auto industry. The services that will be provided out of the new Detroit Automotive include new product introduction (NPI), product engineering, process engineering, industrial automation, enterprise asset management, industrial embedded systems, and supply chain optimisation.

The opening of the Detroit Centre marks the latest domestic growth of TCS America, which has been expanding its North American operations, and currently has more than 50 offices in the US and Canada.
