TCS targets $3 Billion business from BPO
Bangalore: Tata Consultancy Services aims to increase its revenue to $3 billion in the next five years. In the first quarter of current fiscal, the revenue from the BPO segment was 822 crore, 11 percent of the total revenue. N Chandrasekaran, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director, TCS said, "The BPO offering was key to the company's full services play and providing end-to-end services. To ensure full-service capability, TCS BPO, other than vertical and horizontal services, would also offer KPO and platform-based services." The company is planning to recruit 1,500-2,000 employees, primarily in India, to ramp up its back office services business over the next 12 months. In the quarter ended June 30, 2009, TCS beat forecasts with a 22 percent rise in quarterly profit. Chandrasekaran said, "The business environment remained weak and there was pressure on fees due to the global economic downturn." Analysts tracking the sector said that it was natural for the IT giant to increase its BPO focus. "IT players have realised that there are some aspects of BPO that are recession-proof as they cater to non-discretionary spend. So, focusing on these capabilities makes sense," said an analyst.
