Simputer launched for enterprise segment

BANGALORE: PicoPeta Simputers Pvt Ltd and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) have launched the Simputer handheld computing device for the enterprises called 'Amida Alchamy.' An initial version of the handheld device is being made available for Rs 9,950 and as part of its marketing plans, PicoPeta is planning to open Amida showrooms initially in Bangalore and in other cities at a later stage. Giving details about the product and the company's plans, PicoPeta CEO Dr Swami Manohar said, "There is a requirement of such handheld devices for the enterprise market. We are offering the Simputer and enterprises can build solutions top of it." Some of the companies like TCS, VSNL, Sify and Reliance has bought Simputers to test their applications on it. "Amida Alchamy can be very useful for companies like Hindustan Lever, where their field staff can use to record the data from various distributors and retails. Later they can download to their system or server," Dr Manohar said. As part of the company's plans, PicoPeta is targeting 70 percent of its total sales from retail. "We are targeting the retail market mostly. But we need to concentrate on the enterprise market also," Dr Manohar said, adding, "Currently we are not expecting any revenue from the retail segment and want to spread the awareness among individuals about the product." Dr Manohar said, "For the enterprise segment, we have already generated enough enquires. Some of the companies are pilot testing their solutions on Simputers for their requirement. We are hopeful of getting orders." For the SMB segment, PicoPeta plans to offer e-mail/tele support with additional charges. "We can even develop the solutions if any company needs it. Also if any enterprise wants to go for a higher version, which costs around 19,950, we can provide them," Dr Manohar said. So far the company has spent over 4.5 crore on developing the product. and three versions of Simputers available in the market cost between 9,950 to 19,950. BEL is assisting PicoPeta in marketing and development of the product. "Around 10,000 Simputers have already been manufactured.
