Another notable firm that was taken down by Anonymous was EMC Corp’s RSA, which issues Secure ID Tokens as a double measure to keep its customers’ data safe. RSA is used by millions of people worldwide along with passwords to make their information more secure. The two-factor authentication allows two factors to identify a user: one being the password combination, and the other one is a software that generates a new six digit number every minute that only the user can enter correctly.

It fell prey to Anonymous’ attack because an employee downloaded a datasheet attachment ridden with viruses that was sent via email to the firm’s HR department. The virus made copies of all the secure ID tokens that were sent out to customers, and hence enabled the hackers gain access to sensitive information that cost the security firm $66 million. Moreover, Anonymous further gained access to information that made Lockheed Martin (a customer of RSA) easier to penetrate.
