Porn websites flop in India, but succeed in U.S.
Bangalore: The U.S. is a fertile ground for porn websites as eight of the top 100 websites in that country are sex related, while India has two porn sites among its top 100. The findings, based on the Alexa's list of top 100 websites in U.S. and India, highlights that the six sites like RedTube, Youporn, Tube8.com, Xvideo.com, XNXX Gallerie and Megaporn are exclusive in the U.S. list. The websites Pornhub and Adult Friendfinder are popular both in U.S. and India. "The prime hesitation towards these websites in India is the current outlook towards porn. Till there is a significant shift in the attitude towards porn and it is legalized in the country, investment in this sector is not possible," said a venture capitalist (VC) of a leading venture firm, requesting anonymity. The distaste towards matrimonial site in U.S. is clearly visible as no such site has found a place under top 100, while in India, matrimonial sites such as shadi.com, jeevansathi.com, Bharat Matrimony.com have found a prominent place in the list. Entertainment websites such as www.imdb.com, Exbii.com, songs.pk, Santabanta.com and social networking sites like Face Book, Orkut, Hi5, Tagged, My space and PerfSpot lead in India. In terms of the popularity of E-commerce, online advertising and blogs oriented websites, India and the U.S. look almost similar, while search engines and news portals are in the growing stage. "Had the porn sector been legal and the profit margins would have been high, there would have been some interest among the VCs to approach the sector. In the real scene, porn is not a huge industry in terms of revenue, rather it is huge due to advertisements and viewership," said Anil Syal, Gaja Capital Partners, a private equity firm.
