P.Harikrishnan is World junior chess champion

KOCHI: P. Harikrishnan Tuesday became the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to be crowned junior World chess champion. Harikrishnan, who began the concluding day of the World Chess Championship here with 9.5 points, secured a draw with top seeded Berkes Ferenc of Hungary and emerged the winner with 10 points. As title winner, Harikrishnan also acquired an International Master norm. India's Eesha Karavade finished third in the girl's section. Anand won the title in 1987, while Koneru Humpy won the girl's title in 2001. The 43rd edition of the World Junior Chess Championship had begun here Nov 18. India hosted the tournament for the fourth time. It was held in Kerala for the third time with Kozhikode the venue for the event in 1993 and 1998. A total of 150 participants from 40 countries took part in the 13-round event.
