Bangalore: The 2nd annual conference and exhibition on broadband and wireless technologies - "Mobility and Wireless World 2008" attracted over 100 senior executives from different industries. The conference was organized by Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT). With the broadband connectivity reaching 2.5 million last year in India, the conference stressed on the need of the government and the industry to take off the beat track to catch up with countries like China and Brazil in wireless broadband connectivity. During the inauguration Ramamurthy Sivakumar, Managing Director, Intel Asia Pacific said, "Last year, the government had projected to touch a nine million mark in broadband Internet connections but it registered only 2.5 million new connections. So there is a desperate urgency to go and try out something new in the country. I don't see any national consensus in favor of broadband policies." In this context, R. Bandyopadhyay, Special Secretary, Dept of Telecommunication said that India has already reached 3.3 million broadband subscribers by the end of last year. Moreover, he promised that the government is geared to reach out to 20 million broadband users by the end of 2012. However, this will not happen, without support of other organizations and the PC makers. PC makers have to reduce the cost so that common man has access to computer. Today as more than two billion videos and one billion-consumer email boxes being downloaded, R.N Prabhakar, Member TRAI, asserted the need to utilize the available technologies. Using the DSP cables and 60,000 cable operators available in India, Prabhakar finds that 20 million subscribers can be added more. L.V Sastry, VP & Chief of Operations, Bharti Airtel shared his views on latest trends in mobile broadband and how its deployment has led to the evolution of mobile enabled business processes. He also discussed the opportunities in store once the broadband is available in 3G. The event also showcased the broadband deployments plans of BSNL. As a case study for broadband for public places, Balakrishna Rao, Head - IT, Manipal Universal Learning, presented the model deployed in the Manipal Campus.
