MUMBAI: Novartis Pharma AG has announced the commencement of its software development centre, Development IT@India (DIT@I), in Mumbai, the company's fourth site in the world.

"The new establishment will help in data application development, maintenance and support in areas of data management, data warehousing and web development," Novartis Pharma global head (Development IT) Iso Moshfegh told reporters.

The centre would also work on document and knowledge management, modelling and stimulation, he said.

DIT@I would recruit around 60 Full-Time Employees (FTE) in 2004 and an additional 42 FTEs during 2005-08, he said, adding, the centre would help in a potential savings of around $42 million over the next five year period.

The company's other Development IT centres are located in Switzerland, US and UK, and provides specialised IT solutions for drug development, he said.

Novartis India country president Ranjitt Shahani said a combination of qualified IT professionals, proficiency in English, software quality processes and cost structure contributed to selecting India for the Development IT centre.
