Nokia and Microsoft merger; 6,000 jobs under threat
Bangalore:With more competitors like Apple and Android coming up in the market, Nokia's growth has become obsolete. Nokia is forced to make a big transition as it prepares to move away from the Symbian operating system to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7. Nokia will adopt Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 as its main smartphone operating system for the next two years.The merger is to be done at the end of April. This has caused a stronger impact on the Finnish labour as a threat for their jobs in.Many engineers at Nokia have worked on developing and maintaining Symbian operating system.Now they are likely to be sent packing. A reduction in research and development activities is set to be announced by the end of the month, with as many as 6,000 jobs under threat. Nokia labour force comprises of Finland,s most population, nearly 38 percent.This is a global restructuring of their product development, so it is not only about Finland. Nokia has said the transition would extend till 2012.Under Finnish laws, companies who announce job cut plans have to negotiate with labour unions to complete the deal without any complications. Nokia is planning to announce the job cuts after Finland,s general elections. Asked about the reorganization, finance minister Jyrki Katainen told that he expects Nokia to do its best to create new opportunities for those who will lose their jobs. Nokia remains a sales giant in Europe and throughout much of the rest of the world, despite its weak presence in the U.S.
