Bangalore: Status of higher education in India is getting flexible day by day. Universities throughout the country are creating opportunities to the students to select their interested courses for studying and opt for different combinations according to their personal choice and skills.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is launching a paper-registration scheme. This scheme will allow students to choose any number of papers. There will be no restrictions as far as age and qualifications or pre-knowledge of subjects are concerned, reports Aaditi Isaac, TOI. Pankaj Khare, registrar of students registration division, IGNOU described the purpose of the scheme is to allow the students to pick the courses they want to study and at the same time to provide students to take the exam online. IGNOU is not only the university which is providing these facilities, but the School of Liberal Studies, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Gandhinagar, a four year undergraduate program in liberal studies is allowing students for the first two years, to choose from over 30 subjects ranging from arts, science, commerce, management and performing arts. In Baroda's MS University, in the faculty of arts, it is allowing students to select a variety of disciplines across semesters. Nitin Vyas, dean of faculty of arts was of the opinion that the idea of this facility is to facilitate learners to choose from a range of disciplines with a measure of inter and multi- disciplinarily and offer individual choices. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Hyderabad, from January this year has introduced elective courses in theatre, journalism and HR for the second, third and fourth years, respectively, of the degree program.
