Chennai: Technology watchdog Gartner Inc. says the mobile laptop market in India is growing at 70 percent annually, with signs of continuity in the trend, even as desktop computer sales seem to have hit a plateau.

"Mobile personal computer (laptop) shipments would continue to be dominated by multinational brands but what was heartening to note is that domestic brands are holding their grounds as far as desk-based PCs are concerned," Gartner said.

"Traditionally, Q1 (first quarter has been the best for the Indian market, with heavy government buying," said Diptarup Chakraborti, principal research analyst for Gartner's client computing group.

"However, the quarter has also seen large enterprises increase their investments in PC purchases, albeit in mobile PCs," he added.

"The last quarter of 2006 coincided with heavy festival buying by the consumer segment, which did not contribute much in this quarter. This was one more reason of low desktop sales his quarter."

Globally, PC shipments totalled 62.7 million units in the first quarter of 2007, an 8.9 percent increase from the same period last year, according to preliminary results put out by Gartner.

"The worldwide total is in line with Gartner's earlier projections. However, the geographic regions showed mixed results."
