NEW DELHI: Indians working in Afghanistan may get increased security in the wake of an Indian engineer's beheading by the Taliban. Pranab Mukharjee, Defense Minister said today "We are contemplating steps to provide Indians more security in Afghanistan in consultation with the government there.” The Taliban militia who had demanded withdrawal of all Indians from the country abducted telecom engineer K. Suryanarayana. He was however beheaded before the end of the deadline on Sunday. One of the steps being considered was dispatching additional paramilitary Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) troopers. Some 200 ITBP personnel provide close security to Indian nationals working in Afghanistan, with Afghan army and police forces being responsible for general area security. Around 2000 Indians are estimated to be working in Indian-aided projects in Afghanistan like highways, power transmission lines, hospitals, schools and radio and TV stations.
