India Contributes Bulk of New Words to English

When asked whether jugaad is on its way into the dictionary Joanna said "We constantly monitor how people are using words. We also consult the corpus of English words to test out new words. If we see a high frequency of people using the same word to express the same meaning, the word makes it into the dictionary."

The word “jugaad” at present has multiple usages and used in both negative and positive connotations. While it means solid prudent innovation for some, it means quick fix for a few. Others look at it as not-so smart approach to make some task falsely look like it's done.

Airdash, prepone and undertrial are among the words that have made it to the eighth edition of the dictionary from India. Chargesheet, revert, avail, ply are some of the words that have got a fresh made-in-India meaning.

Turnbull is of the opinion that Indian students find writing in English difficult, an experience she observes in other parts where English is not a native language. She said "Students don't plan their writing. They also don't check back written work, nor show it to others,” as reported by ET.
