Heart Ailments Rampant 73 percent of Bangaloreans

Among the CVD-prone cities, it is Kolkata that has topped the list. Kolkata accounts for the highest number of smokers and patients with systolic blood pressure, and both the categories have a direct connection with heart diseases.

Nearly half of the respondents were found to be suffering from obesity which exposed Bangalore’s high obesity index.

Chandigarh and Delhi are said to have most obese people, who also suffer from the problem of cholesterol. Bangalore stands third in cholesterol, diabetes and smoking parameters. Surprisingly, it is Chennai which is currently the diabetes capital.

The survey also revealed information about people in low age groups with high health risks.

Out of the respondents, 65 percent of people in the 30-34 age groups were at risk, while those aged 40-44 reached a high 80 percent.

Experts say that people’s ill health should be blamed on the type of lifestyle they lead. Dr Priyanka Rohatgi, chief clinical nutritionist and HoD, dietetics department, Apollo Hospitals, says, "Diet has undergone major changes depending on convenience. For working couples, eating out is more frequent. Preference for processed, preserved foods and fried foods has gone up noticeably. A menu devoid of vegetables, fruits and whole grains will only make people more vulnerable to CVD."
