CHANDIGARH: Haryana will develop the relatively new sectors of bio-informatics and telemedicine in view of their potential for investment and employment.

"The Haryana cabinet today decided to include the relatively new sectors of bio-informatics and telemedicine in the list of information technology enabled services in view of their potential for investment and employment," a Haryana IT department official Wednesday said.

The decision would also ensure future growth of industry in these sectors, which in turn, would generate employment and revenue in the state.

He said the incentives available to IT enabled services would also be made available to these sectors.

The official said bio-informatics and telemedicine were relatively new fields in India and were emerging as important IT enabled services.

The role of IT in bio-informatics was to provide high-end computational infrastructure as well as tools and techniques to help in reducing the time and cost of analysis for drug discovery and other applications, he added.

Bio-informatics was the emerging area, in which the country had strength in providing IT solutions and it was expected to provide more opportunities, the official said.

He said according to a study conducted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the global bio-informatics industry was expected to be worth $60 billion dollars by 2005.

If the industry and government worked together, it was possible for India to corner five per cent - $3 billion -of the global market share by 2005.
