Bangalore: U.S. based wireless equipment maker Harris Stratex eyes to be a part of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam's (MTNL) franchisee project for rolling out WiMax-based broadband services. Harris Stratex is a WiMAX provider with 70 percent market share in India.

Harald Braun, CEO of Harris Stratex told Business Line, "We will be addressing this opportunity (MTNL's offer for franchisee) indirectly in conjunction with a number of partners. India is a strategic market for Harris Stratex, and we're very proud of our market position in the region." The company, which recently acquired Telsima to boost its WiMax portfolio, is also eyeing opportunities with other Indian players.
It has recently bagged a contract from BSNL for supplying WiMax base station in Kerala. Under the agreement, Harris Stratex will supply its StarMAX 802.16e-2005 base stations, along with solutions for access services network gateway. It has partnered with Indian turnkey solutions provider ICOMM for this project. Customer premises equipment and subscriber units will be supplied by ICOMM, along with deployment and project management services. The company will supply 2,700 base stations to BSNL with the option for an additional 1,350 base station sectors.

The network is expected to support 9 lakh broadband subscribers in Kerala. Braun said that the network is capable of providing mobile WiMAX by BSNL and it will represent one of the largest deployments of this technology in the world. "We understand that BSNL plans to deploy outdoor, indoor and USB dongle consumer premise equipment in the circle," he added.
