Bangalore: GemStone Systems contributed insights on Virtualization at the Convergence'08 with its Senior Systems Engineer Vishal Rao presenting a paper on the topic 'Data virtualization' at the event held at IIT Bombay. According to Rao, data virtualization is an abstraction that combines data from many disparate data sources and makes it appear as one, so that from an application's perspective all data 'appears' to be available in one huge data repository. Rao covered data virtualization from the perspective of a distributed operational data management infrastructure (EDF) that sits between an application process and back-end data sources. An Enterprise Data Fabric (EDF) enables data virtualization while providing features like distributed caching, reliable messaging, DB semantics, transactional capabilities etc for enterprise data sources at the same time itself acting like a transactional data resource. Convergence is a workshop organized by the Department of Computer Science& Engineering (CSE). The event this year was held at K.R Building, CSE Department, at IIT Bombay. It is aimed at bringing together experts from the industry and academia working on virtualization technologies to provide an integrated view of their research and experiences. Convergence is a tremendous platform for researchers to share their work with the rest of the community. Convergence has brought in different sessions such as Wireless Communications, Data Mining, and Computing Infrastructure in Enterprise Networks and Databases. This year, the event focuses on the Research on Virtualization. Speakers from VMWare, NetApp, Intel,Qumranet, Symantec, IBM IRL and faculty members from IIT's talked about their research in Virtualization.
