Singapore: The computer sales in Asia Pacific are falling apart with the sales of desktop computers and laptops sliding for the first time in a decade in the region. The sales of desktops witnessed a 14 percent drop, while laptops sales dipped by five percent. Declining consumer spending triggered the first year-on-year decline since the third quarter of 1998, when the region was grappling with the Asian financial crisis. "This quarter was quite a jaw-dropper not just in China but also in India," said Bryan Ma, Regional Director for personal systems research with IDC. As per the IDC study, the quarter saw a total sale of 17.2 million desktop computers and laptops. It is the public sector which is expected to revive the sector from the downturn. The year is witnessing an increased interest from the non-computing SMEs to shift to computerized infrastructures and even the government organizations are trying to implant more computing systems. Amidst the decline, struggling Chinese computer giant Lenovo recorded the highest market share of 18.3 percent, followed by U.S. rival Hewlett Packard (HP) which had 14.1 percent, and Dell at 9.1 percent. Among others, Taiwanese computer firm Acer was fourth with market share of 7.5 percent and China's Founder ranked fifth, with four percent.
