NEW DELHI:In a move that will make mobile phone usage more cheaper, especially while traveling, cellular operators have slashed roaming charges from 3 a minute to 1.99 a minute. The move came just hours after Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran urged operators to reduce roaming charges. “Mobile charges for roaming are very, very high, I think they should be much lower than the existing rates. BSNL does not charge anything for roaming. Why cant the private operators take this initiative to bring them down,” he asked while speaking at a seminar. Despite having one of the cheapest phone rentals in the world, roaming charges during traveling was exorbitant in India. The new roaming tariffs will be applicable from May 1. Cellular operators like Airtel, Hutch and Idea have reduced tariffs while other are expected to announce their tariffs soon.
