Bangalore: One person was killed and three injured in Karnataka Friday when Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel fired on a group of people after a verbal duel with them, police said. The incident occurred at Dharmasthala, a pilgrimage centre in coastal Dakshina Kannada district, about 300 km from here. The security personnel were in Karnataka on poll duty and had gone to Dharmasthala to visit the temple there. They had parked their vehicles in the open ground in front of the temple. A number of youth were playing cricket and got into a verbal duel with the policemen who teased them, a Dakshina Kannada police spokesperson said on phone from Dharmasthala. "The youth were 'lathicharged' (baton charged) by the CRPF men which enraged the locals who rushed to stop the security personnel from leaving the place. At this point shots were fired by the security personnel from inside one of their vehicles killing one person and injuring at least three others," the spokesperson said. The dead man has been identified Aithappa, around 25 years old. This is the second incident involving security personnel deployed in Karnataka for poll duty, in scuffle with the people. A week back policemen from Kerala clashed with people on a beach in Mangalore. The policemen were arrested and are now out on bail.
