DHAKA: Bangladesh will ask that its goods be given duty-free access to Indian markets during bilateral trade talks Thursday. A high-level source in the commerce ministry said Dhaka would also ask New Delhi to reduce the huge trade gap and put in place infrastructure for expanded trade with India's seven northeastern states. The talks will be held in New Delhi. The northeastern states want to increase trade with Bangladesh, but are unable to because of a lack of facilities like proper roads and banks, the source said. Senior officials from different ministries had met last week and prepared a draft agenda of the demands that Bangladesh plans to make at the talks and suggestions to reduce the trade gap. The trade gap between Bangladesh and India in the fiscal year 2001-02 was $1.2 billion in favor of India.
