Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Limited, a biotechnology company based in Bengaluru, India. She started Biocon in 1978 and is the sole reason for the company’s evolution from an industrial enzyme manufacturing company to a fully integrated bio-pharmaceutical company. Today the company has a well-balanced business portfolio of products and a research focus on diabetes, oncology and auto-immune diseases. Kiran also established two subsidiaries: Syngene (1994) to provide development support services for discovery research and Clinigene (2000) to cater to clinical development services.

In 1989, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri and in 2005, the Padma Bhushan from government of India for her notable pioneering works. Recently, TIME magazine mentioned her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and she also made the Forbes list of World’s 100 most powerful women.
