Bangalore: Some foods are tasty, delicious and incredibly tempting for even the most disciplined person. But before you grab that temptation, think whether it’s good for your health. Some of these tempting food stuffs can trigger a stroke that can even cause death. Stroke affects more than 700,000 people each year. Here is a list of five food items that cause the damage and leads to stroke. Diet Soda The researchers found that people who drank diet soda every day were 48percentage more likely to suffer a stroke or other vascular event over a nine-year span, compared with people who didn't drink any soda. Diet soda consumption is directly linked to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which is a main risk factor for heart problems and stroke. You can avoid this risk factor by substituting more water for soda in your daily diet. Smoked and Processed Meats Smoked and processed meats are packed with sodium, and preservatives to keep processed meats from going bad. Sodium nitrate and nitrite have been shown by researchers to directly damage blood vessels, causing arteries to harden and narrow. Studies found 42-percent increase in coronary heart disease for those who eat one serving of processed meat a day. Chips and Store-Bought Baked foods All these baked foods and chips are high in trans fats, which are hydrogenated oils. Trans Fats are found in all kinds of snack foods, frozen foods, and baked goods, including salad dressings, microwave popcorn, stuffing mixes, frozen tater tots, French fries, cake mixes, and whipped toppings. Fried fast foods such as onion rings, French fries, and fried chicken are worst among them. A recent study found that trans fats promoted inflammation and higher levels of C-reactive protein, which is to stroke. Red Meat A study published in Stroke journal shows that women who consumed a large portion of red meat each day had a 42-percent higher incidence of stroke. Red meat, with its high saturated fat content, isn't healthy for those looking to prevent heart disease and stroke. The saturated fat in red meat will clog arteries with a buildup of protein plaques. Canned Food One tin can of canned chicken noodle soup contains more than 1,100 mg of sodium, while many other varieties, from clam chowder to simple tomato, have between 450 and 800 mg per serving. This increased intake of sodium will directly affects stroke risk. A recent study showed that people who consume more than 4,000 mg of sodium daily have more than double the risk of stroke compared to those who eat 2,000 mg or less.
