5 Richest Dictators of All Time

Bashar al-Assad:

Bashar al-Assad is another rich one on the list of richest dictators. As per ‘The Guardian’ the Syrian President’s realizable assets stand at $1.5 billion. His wealth constitutes land, energy and licenses.

After his elder brother Bassel, the heir to their father, was killed in a car crash, Bashar was hastily recalled to Syria to take over Bassel's role. He entered the military academy and later on took charge of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon. In the beginning he was seen by the domestic and international community as a potential reformer and gaining the nickname "The Hope", this expectation gave way to the events of the Syrian civil war. Syrian opposition called for his resignation from power. Bashar made sure his key relatives were put in prime government positions and he is known to hold his cards, money and positions tightly within his inner circle.
