Record stores have shown a growth of -76.3 percent and a revenue of $1,804 million from a total of 2,916 establishments. The vinyl record and audio cassettes are no longer sold in a majority of the music stores, and have almost faced extinction. The competition is almost damaging, from the 'CD shops', freely available music on the Internet, as well as large chains of music stores which sell recorded music at a very low price. Several shops in the UK and northern part of U.S. had to pull down their shutters; even the giants like Virgin had to drastically cut down on their presence.
