Newspapers have shown a growth of -35.9 percent during the period 2000 to 2010 and saw revenue of $40,726 million from a total of 6,128 establishments. Several publishing houses have reported a drop in their circulation, display and ad revenues, apart from several layoffs. The newspaper industry is facing a neck-to-neck competition from the Internet and the cable news. A number of newspapers have been slated for closure, with a rise in the level of bankruptcy among the publishing houses. Though it has been stated that reading a newspaper has a lower impact on global warming than reading news online for 30 minutes, but the ease and flexibility provided by the Internet has overcome the once mighty newspapers.
