Just understanding the words is not enough, as neural networks trades in increasing layers of abstraction, Google had to go beyond basic web queries.

Google is trying to get its computers to actually understand what you are asking for. The search giant had initiated “Knowledge Graph” the company’s effort to compile a database of “entities” in the world.

Google servers are now aware of 500 million such entities, so when you search for “Tom Cruise”, it will identify a person rather than a vacation destination or simply give you web results for related words.

All the different parts of Google are finally working together. The Google you are interacting within Google Now is very different from the Google you used as recently as a year ago.

"Google Now actually started as a twenty percent project," Hugo Barra told The Verge. Google encourages its employees to work on the side projects too, what had started as a side project has now grew into a giant “Google Now”, holding promising future. “We literally have dozens of teams working with us right now, and the achievement with Google Now is that it feels like those teams are integrated, not fragmented,” he added.
