35 Pct Women Fall Prey to Partner's Sexual Assault: WHO

A woman who is a victim of physical and sexual abuse by their partners is likely to have a number of health problems.

As such, 16 percent will have a low-birth-weight baby; twice the number of them will have an abortion and will experience depression and anxiety too. Also, they are 2.3 times more likely to suffer from alcohol use.

Further, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) known as a deadly disease and other sexually transmitted diseases are the outcome of the violence against women especially by their own intimate partners. This is mainly due to violent relationships where the women have the inability to consult condom use.

It is thus very essential to bring into notice of all health-care providers to be aware of the relationship between exposure to violence and women’s ill health. A helping hand and support should be extended to such victims of sexual assault by counseling them on various problems which they have come across.
