5. Sholay (1975)

The baddies of all baddies Gabbar Singh, the “dosti” of Jai and Veeru, the shy Radha and the feisty Baanti and her horse Dhanno.  Yes it is the classic Sholay. The movie that set records and broke them as well.  It ran for 286 weeks straight in one Minerva theatre of Mumbai. In the year 1999 BBC India went on to calling Sholay “The Film of the Millennium”. In the 50th year of Filmfare awards Sholay was judged the best film of the past 50 years. But the most ironic incident was that the year when it was released it went on to win only one award; Best Film Editor; M.S. Shinde.

The Story revolves around a village which is being terrorized by a dacoit named Gabbar Singh and the ex-policeman Thakur Baldev Singh calls on the goons Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jaidev (Amitabh Bachchan)to save the village. The story then follows how they save the village and along the way Veeru falls in love with Basanti (Hema Malini) and Jai falls in love with the widow Radha (Jaya Bhaduri).

But in the end Jai succumbs to his injuries while fighting the dacoits, but this film goes down in history for the friendship and chemistry shared between Jai and Veeru and the song Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin…
