2001: Space Odyssey (1968)
You'd think that even with the Academy's distaste to science-fiction, a didactic film like 2001: Space Odyssey would have acknowledged some appreciation. All it got, however, was an anticipated (and richly deserved) award for Best Special Effects. Stanley Kubrick's science-fiction masterpiece 2001 is considered one of the most prominent science fiction movies of all time. It was definitely superior to the big-budget edition of the popular stage musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic 'Oliver Twist' that won the Oscar for best picture that year.
The landmark, science fiction classic -perhaps the finest science-fiction film of all time about exploration of the unknown was released, coincidentally, at the pinnacle of space race amid the USSR and the US. It also, ironically, showed the enduring influence that computers would have in our daily lives.
